Obstetric Ultrasound
This examination evaluates the fetus, placenta and fluid surrounding the baby.
Ultrasonography involves imaging structures within the body using high frequency sound waves.
This is a safe, painless procedure that does not cause any harmful effects to you or your baby.
Before Your Test
There are usually no special preparations for this test. You may be asked to empty your bladder
beforehand.
During Your Test
You will lie on your back with your abdomen exposed. Non-greasy gel will be applied to the skin
in this area. The sonographer will thoroughly examine your uterus, the uterine lining, the
placenta, and the developing baby.
Approximate Exam Time
Depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy and on the specific reason for the test,
this may take up to an hour, but more typically thirty minutes.
After Your Test
Before leaving, you may need to wait briefly while the images are being reviewed. You can get
back to your normal routine right after the test. Your doctor will let you know when the results
are ready.
