Abdominal Ultrasound
Abdominal ultrasound is an imaging test. Ultrasound uses sound waves to form pictures of your
internal organs that appear on a screen. It is used to assess pain or other symptoms. It can help
detect organ problems, such as gallstones, kidney stones, or liver disease. This test involves no
radiation and is harmless.
Before Your Test
For the success of your abdominal ultrasound, prepare as instructed. Do not eat or drink after
midnight before your test. Appointments scheduled for the afternoon will require 6 hours of
fasting prior to the time of your appointment. This includes water, coffee, and other liquids
you would normally have. If you eat or drink anything, your test may be canceled. You may be
asked to put on a gown.
Let the Sonographer know:
- Of your overall health
- Of any prior abdominal surgery
- Of why you are having the test
- Of any prior abdominal ultrasound tests
- Of any medications you are taking
During Your Test
You will lie on an exam table with your abdomen exposed. Non-greasy gel will be put on your skin.
The sonographer will press against your abdomen with a handheld transducer (probe). You may see
images of your organs on a screen. Be sure to do as instructed. This may include taking a deep
breath, holding your breath, or rolling onto one side. This sonographer can answer your questions
about the test. But only a doctor can explain the results.
Approximate Exam Time
Between 20 and 45 minutes.
After Your Test
Before leaving, you may need to wait briefly while the images are being reviewed. You can get
back to your normal routine right after the test. Your Doctor will let you know when the
results are ready.
