Nuclear medicine describes the use of small quantities of radioactive substances (isotopes) to investigate function or physiology of the human body. There are a diverse variety of nuclear medicine tests designed to test the function of different organ systems or to diagnose cancer. An isotope is typically injected by vein and a special type of camera takes a picture of the distribution of the isotope after a period of time. The isotopes are short-lived and the radiation dose to the body is small.
