Intravenous Pyelogram

What is IVP?
An intravenous pyelogram (IVP or IVU) is an x-ray study of your urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, and bladder). This test can help find stones, tumors or other problems within your urinary tract. There is a small amount of radiation with an IVP, but the benefits of this test far outweigh any risks.

Before Your Test
Light supper (soup, jello, yogurt, hot cereal) and fluids. CLEAR FLUIDS ONLY (up to 8 ounces only) on the morning of examination. Prepare for your test carefully: it may be postponed if there is too much stool in your colon.

Let the Technologist know:
  • If you have allergies or asthma
  • Of previous kidney or bladder problems
  • Of Diabetes and / or medication you take
  • Of any previous surgery
  • If you are pregnant or think you may be

During Your Test
You will be given an intravenous (IV) injection of contrast (a substance that enhances x-ray images). It may make you feel hot or give you a metallic taste in your mouth: this lasts only a few seconds. A series of pictures are taken from different angles, usually lying down. You may be asked to empty your bladder before the final x-ray. Once the test is done, you may need to wait a few minutes to make sure the images are satisfactory.

Approximate Exam Time
30 minutes

After Your Test
You can get back to your normal diet and activities right away. This contrast will be eliminated by your kidneys within hours. Your urine will not change color.
