Explanation of the Exam
This scan examines your abdominal organs by creating cross-sectional x-ray pictures. You usually will be asked to drink oral contrast (a flavored inert substance) prior to the scan to delineate your stomach, small bowel, and colon. You will usually receive a contrast injection by vein to provide a more detailed view of your blood vessels and solid organs. In many but not all cases, a pelvic CT is performed immediately following the abdominal CT.
